Absolutely the BEST Pizza in San Jose - A Slice of New York

I'll admit I'm a food snob and when I want pizza, I gotta have the best. Not only good food but excellent service too. Hands down my favorite place for pizza in San Jose, Ca. has to be a Slice of New York (3443 Stevens Creek Blvd San Jose, CA). Thin crust, yes! Best mozzarella, yes. Great toppings, yes. And now in two locations! YES! They just opened a second place at 1253 W. El Camino in Sunnyvale, Ca. More spacious than the original location with sit down areas and even a room set in a subway car inside the restaurant. How creative is that! The whole place is sparkling new and they now offer beer and wine.

All of the graffiti art was done by Scott, who happens to work there behind the counter. I was amazed how I kept seeing new things within the artwork, really a fabulous job and all done with spray paint.

You really must try it. Try just a slice or order a whole pie. The pies are huge! You can view the menu here. Great service, fabulous food and a really cool ambiance. Way to go guys. Congrats on the new diggs!

Christmas Window Displays in NYC

Tis the time of year for family, fun, twinkling lights, decorating the house, yard and tree and getting festive with the holiday spirit. For me, that means baking batches and batches of cookies to give out to friends, wrapping my presents with care and watching old holiday movies with a glass of warm cocoa. One of my favorite things to do is to see the Christmas window displays. We went to San Francisco last weekend and there were a few but they just don't compare to fifth Ave in NY. In fact all of NY gets the spirit on. I've been there a few times over the holiday's and it's just breathtaking. This year I had to take a virtual tour though as I'm staying snug in Calif for now. Kevin Sharkey has a fabulous image set on his website. These are just a few.

1950s Pin Up Lingerie Ad

Spun-lo Rayon Fabric ad from 1951. I love the illustration here and how she is sporting her fur shrug over her undies. Just lovely! Not sure who the illustrator is here. Maybe Pete Hawley or Gil Elvgren?

Sea Star Christmas Tree

We finally got our Christmas tree up this year, a little bit later than usual. I decided to use sea stars on it this year for a change of pace. I think it came out nice and fun! Now all I need is a pin up for the top. Happy holidays to my loyal readers, hoping you have a safe, healthy and happy season!

Fancy Fur meets Vintage Swimwear

Photographer Justin Ridler combines lovely vintage inspired swimwear, head wear and warm weather furs to create some absolutely stunning resort wear, beachwear fashion spreads. The fashion photo shoot features model Amy Finlayson. Stylist Britt McCamey. I've always loved shots like this that pose models in two untypically related types of fashion creating a wonderful visual tension.

Try creating your own with one of our furs from Retrowear and one of our vintage swimsuits from Glamoursurf!

Cole of California Swimwear Advertising in the 1940s and 1950s

Fred Cole used various ingenious advertising techniques in his ads from the 1940s and 50s. We show share of them here.

Cole developed Matletex, an elasticized fiber, that helped to create the shape of women.

Wartime restrictions in the 1940s placed American companies on the amount of fabric they could use in fashions including swimwear. This is an ingenious way Cole used 'Parachute Colors' in advertising.

Ren Wicks was one of the artists Cole of California used in their ads in the 1940s and 1950s.

This is one of my favorites from Cole in the 1940s. Text for the main image reads "Backless Strapless swimsuit by Cole in EVERFAST. Exciting new bra engineered to stay put, trunks shirred with Lastex for perfect control. Sizes Small, Medium, Large $10.95. matching barrel skirt, ideal weekend accessory. $10.95

And here is a stand alone ad featuring the same 'backless strapless' swimsuit paired with another skirt. I have yet to come across one of these types of backless strapless swimsuits. I would love to actually see the construction and how they really fit.

Esther Williams became the spokes model for Cole in the late 1940s. You can read more about that effort on our blog here. Overall, I believe these were successful and brilliant advertising techniques in their day.
