1930s Swimsuit Clad Diving Image

Image is from 1930 by Byron Harmon. Chateau lake Louise, Banff National Park, Canada. Byron was a photographer of the Canadian Rockies.

This image is mesmerizing and chilling at the same time. What a beautiful image of a diver, in form, against the natural beauty of the environment. Snow on the mountains in the background, and you know that lake is not heated. How many of you go swimming in the middle of winter?

1920s Swimwear

1929 George Hoyningen Huene

Can I just say that I must have been reincarnated from the 1920's 1930s, as I just adore the swimwear from this period. Not to mention the makeup and fashion. Perhaps I was a model for bathing suits, I'm sure I had a bob. And I'm also sure I would have rocked one of these bathing suits!

Oleg Cassini and Vintage Swimwear

Oleg Cassini might not be one of the first names you  think of when you dream of vintage swimwear but he did license, produce and design for several companies including his own. In mid 1963 Oleg designed swimwear under his own label Waterclothes. Waterclothes also employed the skills of American swimwear designer Tom Brigance, as did Sinclair and Gabar in the late 1950s and 1960s. Cassini also designed and licensed his name to several manufacturers of swimwear and lingerie including Peter Pan and Mare Moda. Also of note are his sunglasses designs for Oculens and tennis clothes for Munsingwear.  By 1963 his renown enabled him to branch out into other licenses including foundations, sportswear, sport shirts, sweaters and clothes for young America. In the mid 1960s he disbanded his top ready to wear line and since then was involved only in licensing arrangements.

"The swimsuit should be an envelope to the body - a second skin.I have always had a sexual message - I never believe in tampering with a womans body- the idea is to enhance the female form."

I couldn't agree more!

To see more of his swimwear designs please visit the Oleg Cassini website.

And of final note a wonderful video from our fabulous friend Stevie @ Glamourdaze. You should really subscribe to her video channel. It's not to be missed!

Pin Curls Poolside

What a fun ad from 1950 for lady Ellen 'Colour Klippies'. Don't fret if you r hair get's wet! Use Colour Klippies poolside. You could even write for a brochure to show you how to manifest the Pin Curl. What I am loving is all those fabulous swimsuits though. Take not of the one on the left in particular. See that logo on the hip? Make that both hips! That's a pageant swimsuit made by Catalina, the pageant suits they made had the logo on both hips, not just one which was the usual. Anyone recognize her?

Beach Couture by Adriana Degreas - Paris Spring Summer 2014

This morning my on-line friend Jasmin Jones from Australia posted this video on Facebook. First off - Thank you Jazzie! This collection is downright stunning and I'm enamored with the whole collection! Black and white swimwear, maillots and bikinis, casual and sophisticated lounge wear and caps all with an incredible design sense.Go now, check it out!

Adriana Degreas is a Brazillian designer who was born into a family with deep-rooted history in vintage shopping – stocking designers like Emilio Pucci, Azzedine Aläia, Pierre Cardin and André Courrèges, among others – Brazilian designer Adriana Degreas stepped out to combine elegant, sophisticated shapes and high-end materials, making her creations glamorous works of art.

Adriana turned to the swimwear world when she got married and started working with her husband and his family. He was in charge of a beachwear company with 60 years of tradition. In 2001, proposing a glamorous beach, she decided to accomplish an authorial project, today known as “Adriana Degreas”.

Cut outs cut outs cut outs...

This maxi sleeveless lounge wear set reminds me of a cross between Schiaparelli and Jantzen.Sleek. stylish and on trend. A great use of the image silhouette to the body, no?

Sophisticated cutouts, fabulous use of see-through fabrics and stunning design details.

You all know how much I love sleeved swimwear because it's just so unexpected, and this baby does not disappoint!

My hat is off to you Adriana! Fabulous and on trend for me, a mix of retro styling with sophistication, elegance and a bit of peek-a-boo. Bon Chance.

1947 Cole of California Sexy Streamline Advertisement

1947 Cole of California

Beautiful new backsweep, in Lastex from Cole of California. This ad is from 1947, the suit is called 'Streamline' and it appears to be part of a series from the 'Westward to the Sea' Beachwear Collection. We're going to have to research that further and see what else was in this fine collection as this one looks just marvelous.

Vintage Maidenform Bra Advertisement - 1961 - Chariots of Fire

This past weekend I picked up quite a few vintage magazines. I love reading them, the stories, the ads, the prices, the pictures! This one caught my eye with it's fabulousness. First off, great inspiration for a Halloween costume don't you think? Secondly, did you know Maidenform did swimwear? YUP! I have a couple of swimsuits in my -not listed yet- inventory, I really should pull them to shoot for you all. But I digress, back to this fabulous ad.

Whomever came up with this concept and the tag line is brilliant! Her red cape, lapels and arm cuff bracelets frame that pointy cup white bra in a way that makes you look at her bust line and take notice, and that tag line supports it all the more. She in charge of her chariot and is leading the pack in a happy, yet somewhat dreamy way.

Let's check the details. 'Butterfly Insert' to adjust the size and fit of each cup as it uplifts and separates?  It's hard to tell but it looks like a partial under-wire. Not your circle stitch bra to keep your points, they look sewn from the outside in to the center. And look, Maidenform is calling Spandex new in 1961, and even giving it it's own trade name - 'Vyrene'.

Racerback Vintage Swimsuit from Anne Cole 1987

This image from Anne Cole is from 1987. Anne Cole used to work with her father at Cole of California, she spread her wings to fly with her own company in the 1980s. I like the styling of this image, from the racerback deep cut arms (is that a signature bobble on the back), to the swimcap she's wearing. Bravo.

Vintage 1950s Catalina Swimwear banded with MINK!

 1955 Catalina Swimwear

It's not too often that you come across something really fabulous that just makes you smile for days. This advertisement featuring Catalina swimwear did it for me.This ad came out in 1955 to show the stars in upcoming films, but there is some great info in that copy.

Left: Dorothy Lamour in Catalina's Cotton print swim ensemble Yo-Yo-San. Princess line suit with stay-front draped-center bra. Puckerette zip back and peg top tapered shorts. The matching Kabuki kimono style coat has a wrap front, Mandarin collar, tie belt and is lined with white terry cloth. Orange or Blue, about $14. for each piece.

Right: Terry Moore in a Lanton Taffeta suit trimmed in Mink: side shirring with  a flange bra banded with Mink (especially treated for the water). Hyacinth with Sapphire Mink, black with white mink, or cinnamon with ranch mink. About $25.00. That's about $218. in today's value.

Mink & Swimsuits oh my, I wonder how they treated the mink to make it hold up?!?

Sea Nymph by Jordan 1940s 1950s - Vintage Swimwear Advertising

Today we share some images of vintage swimwear advertising from Sea Nymph by Jordan. I like the progression from hand drawn black and white illustrations from the 1940s  to color photographs of the 1950s. And there are some great play on words in the text. Note the three different logo styles as well! Click on images to enlarge.
