1960s Vintage Swimwear Styles

The 1960s, what a decade for swimwear. Came in with definite influences from the previous era, and went out with some very mod creative cutouts. These images are in a progressive style, one from each year, to give you a feel for all the decade had to offer. Stripes, cutouts, sleeves, low cut backs and of course the avant guard.
Many of these ads have some great tag lines to go with them, you can click on the images to see them larger.

 1960 Catalina

Catalina is still using Lastex in their swimwear lines. And they encourage you to have more than one suit.

 1960 Deauville

Low cut back openings and buttons on the shoulder straps are part of the swimwear details of the 1960s.

 1961 Roxanne

Roxanne introduces 'bra sized' swimsuits.

1962 Elisabeth Stewart

Jantzen was the one who introduced sleeved swimwear in the late 50s. This one is from 1963, love the low cut back!

1964 Rudi Gernreich

And then Rudi takes the show and causes an international sensation with his topless swimsuit in 1964.

It is really amazing how swimsuit designs are evolving. But retro styles are still amazing. And I guess these photos also suggest that you don’t need to flaunt excess skin just to look sexy.
