Is Mad Men Moving Fashion Wise into the 1970s?

Megan was wearing a bikini in the debut of Mad Men season 6 and it just looked off to me, it looks more like a cusper or 1970s and beyond to me. Dons trunks were fine, but Megan, not so much. Maybe it's the way the ties on the sides make it look more skimpy. While the bikini did show more skin in the1960s, the waist lines weren't all that low until very late in the decade. The leg lines are right so maybe it is closer to 1969.

Here's a video from 1968 featuring Anne Randall for Coppertone with Army Archard as interviewer.

And check our previous post on vintage swimwear styles from the 1960s,  I'd say 1969 and beyond for Megans bikini swimsuit.

So what do you think, is MadMen starting to mix it up fashion wise? Hmmm, tomorrow let's explore swimsuits we think Megan would have been dazzling in.

I was thinking that too, not so much because of the bikini, but it just seemed some of the fashion and decor picks were more from the 70s and at the very earliest the late 60s, did we skip some years, I thought they were in the early 60s, '65 at the latest.

The new season of Mad Men is taking place in early 1968. They spoke of the "Tet Offensive" took place in Jan of 68. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tet_Offensive

I thought so too. This scene was Christmas 1967, where this season of Mad Men starts. I have a really similar bikini, without the ties - which I think is a 1970s vintage bikini, not completely sure. My mum said she was still wearing something 'more modest' in 1967, when she was 26!

I was a California 'beach bunny' in 1968, and I agree- that suit does seem a bit skimpy and modern for the era. My bikinis came up a little higher on the bottoms, and I don't recall the tops plunging quite as much... of course, I didn't have much on top to plunge, if you know what I mean! The fabric seems correct to me. Thanks for sharing the fun Coppertone ad of the era. Brought back lots of memories.
