Vintage Santa Cruz Beach Postcard Photos

Santa Cruz circa 1941. Long boards and long days were welcomed by the Santa Cruz Surfing Club.

Again Santa Cruz at the Beach Boardwalk. This one does not have a date, but look, almost everyone is fully dressed. My best guess in early 1900s.

Beach thongs greet new buildings and paved boardwalk, season 1954.

Fabulous right. One of these days I'll head over to Santa Cruz and try and take a current image of these scenes so we can compare and contrast the difference. What fun!

Vintage Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk

Brother was it warm here in Ca this last weekend. I picked up a few postcards this weekend because:
1) they are beach related
2) It's Santa Cruz, just over the hill from me
3) Most importantly check out the image by enlarging it.

Do you see what I see????

Look at THAT BEACH UMBRELLA. Oh my oh my oh my. I do want that! I would go perfect with my vintage swimsuit and my vintage Jantzen beach towel. And I'd bet a nickel that is a Jantzen umbrella with the red diving girl adorning it.

There is no date on the postcard, I'm guessing the image is from the 1940s.

I need to take these images (I've got another one coming tomorrow) and try and re-create the photo angle and take a snap to compare how the Santa Cruz beach boardwalk has changed from the to now. That will be fun!

Bathing Costumes & Accessories from 1917

The year is 1917 and this catalogue shows some of the bathing attire and accessories one would have worn back in the day. Not just a bathing suit or dress, but stockings, shoes, and yes a rubber cap. I love to look at period catalogues like this to see the fashions from year to year and the prices! .35 for a rubber swimcap in 1917 translates to $6.36 in todays dollar. Not sure about you but I wouldn't even know where to go to get a swimcap for $6.00!

Sisters By Chance - Friends by Choice

That's how the old saying goes...

And for me it's certainly true! I was lucky enough to grow up in a household full of one older sister, Jody, and three younger sisters; Becky, Barb and Brenda. My older sister Jody has always been someone I look up to, that's what older sisters are for right? They set the example, they take the brunt of being a first child, they protect and love their sisters, offer counsel, set the tone and move forward. Head of the tribe, leader amongst many. I've always admired and loved my older sister Jody, and still do to this day.

Growing up day-to-day in a family of two, then three, then four and finally five; plus two loving parents and an assortment of various pets along the way, makes one appreciate the love of an older sister.

This is a snap a publication took of all of us in 1968, talking about my mom and teaching us the fine art of rummage sales. We learned early the value of thrifting, growing up sharing and caring for others.

Let's fast forward to 45 years later. Yesterday I got an unexpected surprise package from Jody. Inside were not one, but two men's new old stock 1940s swimsuits with a small note of love. Common now, does my sister know me or what?

Love the label, I've seen quite a few of these new old stock swimsuits from the National Knitted Outerwear Association and what is interesting is that there is no label inside, the only info is given from a hang tag.

But I segway, all I can say is Thank you Jody! I love you for all you are, for being who you are, and for being there for me, for helping to trudge the path. I hope you know how much I deeply care for you! XOXO to you my sister, I love you!

Both Jody and I make our living with our small women owned businesses'. We write a blog together at Vintage Detail. Come support us!
