Erotic Wood-Cut Art Prints by Clif Karhu

Today we continue our Playboy series. The following woodcut series were created by Clif Karhu and depict 'The twelve months on love' in ancient Japanese style as they appeared in Playboy January 1969. They are works by an American of Finish origin who has lived and studied with the masters of the wood-block print in Japan. An important aspect of these prints is the flower design on the kimono that varies with the months.

Hunka Hunka Burt Reynolds & James Caan in Playboy 1972 - Playboy Series part 1

I was at the flea this weekend and happened on a bunch of old playboy magazines from the 60's & 70's. I started flipping through them thinking there must be great ads and swimwear to. I wasn't wrong. I've been having fun looking at these and taking some quick images & adding them to my Instagram feed. But, I figured you might enjoy some of what I'm enjoying. So here we go into the land of fashion, illustration, advertising and might I say photography from the 60s & 70s as seen in Playboy Magazine.

First up, July 1972. Cover photography by Robert Harmon. This one is on my nightstand now so I can read the articles. This one especially.

Subtitle: A Revealing History of Lingerie.

You can click on the images to enlarge for the detail.

Flipping through I come across a spread entitled "So it's a bracelet, what's it to ya?" featuring none other than Mr. Burt Reynolds and Mr. James Caan. This image of James is from his Godfather time frame. While Burt had been starring in Deliverance. That's a Gucci necklace Burt has on, just $510. at the time.

And just as kismet would have it, I came across this playboy linoleum cut in my 'stuff'. You know something is going to come out of all of this.

And the one in the top right corner?

18kt Cartier my dear. $185. Oh the man jewelry!

I plan to start posting at least one or two images or maybe just have some fun sharing with you so stay tuned!

Orry Kelly for Catalina Swimwear and the Stars of Hollywood - specifically Bette Davis

Oh no, this is just so wrong! Apparently this ad is from an Italian magazine called 'MODA' from 1988. Yes, I said 1988. Orry Kelly was a fashion designer for the stars and did exclusive designing for swimwear maker Catalina. Bette Davis was used as a model to promote her Warner Brothers films in the mid 1930s along with Kelly who did the costume design for those films. This ad is from 1988, why oh why oh why???? You can definitely see the overlay of the modern 1980s bikini swimsuit on Bette, that would have never been around or appropriate for the 1930s. Not only that but the ad states that the Catalina Swimsuit bears her name.

And here's a lovely pattern I found via a blog post that is the "Bette Davis" bathing suit. Love it!

Still searching for the original Bette ad but in the meantime you can read more about Orry Kelly here.
